Leather Courses B. is supporting CADW’s Open Door Event 2017 – an initiative that offers both local people and visitors alike the chance to explore the hidden treasures of Wales’s culture and history.
- Friday 8th September 2017 5.00pm – 8.00pm
- Saturday 9th September 2017 10.00am – 2.30pm
- Sunday 10th September 2017 10.00am – 2.30pm
Our building is a 19th Century Calvinistic Methodist Welsh village Chapel, lovingly refurbished as a traditional skills (leather) workshop. The building retains many of its original features including stained glass windows, ceiling roses, Ministers Chair and beautiful ceramic floor tiles in the vestibule.
We will be opening our workshop, which is in Penffordd, near Narberth, on Friday 8th September 5.30 – 8pm, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th between 10am and 2.30pm. As well as some historical information about the building itself, there will be demonstrations of traditional leather working skills and an opportunity to try your hand at using some of the leatherworker’s tools and techniques. Aside from sharing skills about how we make handbags, wet-mould leather and create theatrical masks, visitors can also learn about the history of the handbag, the difference between vegetable and chrome tanned leather, hides and skins and what is meant by ‘half a pair of butts’! Entry is free.
Owner and tutor Gaynor Davies-Howell said “ Visitors are normally invited by appointment only, so this is a wonderful opportunity for people to come and see the building itself, the workshop and the courses on offer. We’re not just about handbags though as there will also be a rare opportunity for visitors to see, touch and smell a real piece of treasure recovered from a ship which sank in B., over 200 years ago”.
Leather Courses B. run a weekly leatherwork course where students can come and make any project of their choice. There are also a variety of exciting weekend leatherwork courses for beginners, through to a five day intensive leather-working week for those who would like to take their skills to the next level. Spend a weekend making a beautiful hand stitched leather bag, or choose a two or three day course making luxurious leather keepsake and memory boxes. We welcome groups such as the WI for informative evening talks, demonstrations or leatherwork sessions, and have also recently introduced a ‘taster’ morning for locals who would just like to have-a-go!
